5000 people support gender equality through HeForShe run 2018

On Sunday, 4 March 2018, 5,000 runners gathered at Epiwalk Jakarta for a 5km and 10km run in support of gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Celebrating ahead of International Women’s Day, Indonesia Business Coalition for Women Empowerment (IBCWE), in partnership with UN Women, held a HeForShe Run 2018. The fun run, which was officiated by the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, Puan Maharani, aimed to increase awareness about the importance of the achievement of gender equality in the workplace and in all walks of life.

Gender equality will be achieved when men and women have the will and take actions to work together towards equality. We can start by making these efforts in our closest circle, such as our own family and in the workplace. Specifically, in the workplace, data showed that, women’s labor force participation is less than men. The gap is even more evident in the number of women who hold strategic positions at top management level. Through this event, we would like to invite everyone to work together and to provide equal opportunities for women to participate in the workplace and in the society
Shinta Kamdani, President of IBCWE

Anne Patricia Sutanto, Chairperson of HeForShe Run 2018 and a member of IBCWE’s Advisory Board, said that: “the HeForShe Run provided runners with a platform where they showed their sportsmanship, as well as their support for gender equality and the economic empowerment of women in the workplace.”

Since 5.30 am, women and men runners, members of the public, representatives from civil society organizations, embassies and the private sector, ran, jogged and walked together in efforts to ensure that women can reach their full potential and contribute to public life.
The fun run was also held to support the HeForShe campaign which invites men and boys to be equal partners and agents of change to accelerate the achievement of gender equality.

gender equality benefits both women and men as well as the entire society. It requires everyone to take action. Through the HeForShe campaign, we invite men and boys as equal partners to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. Let us make use of our voices to create transformative change so that all women and men have equal opportunities to reach their full potential
Sabine Machl, UN Women Representative
Aside from the run, there was a competition for the best slogans to support gender equality and HeForShe commitments. In addition, seven murals with messages of gender equality in the workplace were displayed in several places along the running track.
